About Pinatex

"Piñatex® is made of fibre from the leaves of the pineapple plant.

These leaves are discarded from the pineapple harvest, so the raw material requires no additional environmental resources to produce.

The long fibres are extracted through a process called decortication, which is done at the plantation by the farming community.

Ananas Anam has developed the first automated decorticating machine to assist with this process, allowing farmers to utilise greater quantities of their waste leaves.

Once the leaves have been stripped of fibre the leftover biomass can be used as a nutrient-rich natural fertiliser or a biofuel, so nothing is wasted.

The fibres then get degummed and undergo an industrial process to become a non-woven mesh, which forms the base of Piñatex®.

The rolls of non-woven mesh are then transported to Spain for specialised finishing. This unique process is what gives Piñatex® its leather-like appearance, creating a textile that is soft and flexible, yet very durable." --Quote from https://www.ananas-anam.com

Care Instructions for your Pinya Bag.

Cleaning your Pinya Bag:

Using a soft washcloth, gently rub the Pinatex with warm, slightly-soapy water. Then allow the Pinatex to dry. This cleaning process does not have to be done more than once a month (unless something gets spilled on the material).

Waxing your Pinatex Bag:

We recommend waxing your handbag with a natural wax, like Dubbin or Beeswax, in order to reinforce the bag's resistance to water, tearing, and fraying. This process is not needed more than twice a year.

Materials:

  • Blow dryer

  • Soft cloth that can be discarded after

  • Natural wax tin

  • Pinya Bag & 2 Straps

Technique:

  1. Heat the wax using direct hot air from the hairdryer

  2. Once the wax becomes soft, dip the cloth into the wax

  3. Use very small amounts of wax and gently rub the wax onto The Pinya Bag, covering the entire Pinatex areas of the bag

  4. Adjust both straps to their longest possible length

  5. Use very small amounts of wax and gently rub the wax, covering the entire Pinatex areas of both the straps

  6. Allow The Pinya Bag & 2 straps to dry for up to 36 hours

How eco-friendly is the packaging, really?

MELIOR takes its dedication to the bettering of the planet very seriously. Detail and care have been paid to even the smallest details of our products and our packaging.

Your Pinya Bag will arrive in a shipping envelope. This is a customary package that mail couriers use to apply shipping labels too. But MELIOR went the extra step and had our courier source and use envelopes made from 100% recycled paper. When there's enough paper out there to recycle, there's no need to encourage deforestation or new paper production. We think you'd agree.

Once you receive your package and excitedly rip through the envelope, you'll reveal our custom MELIOR box. This box is also made from 100% recycled paper!

As you can see, our logo is stamped onto the box. But we didn't just use a plastic stamp. That would go against your morals and ours. We use stamps made in the U.K. from refurbished oak wood, and we love the way it looks... We even made sure to use vegan ink!

The stamp feature is a reminder that everything is made by hand, as no stamp can be made perfect by anything other than a machine.

Finally, the dust bag The Pinya Bag rests in is made from a near-magic material called TENCEL. It's woven from cellulose fibers, which are made from wood pulp. It is 100% sustainable and biodegradable!
